Moonstone: the glow

Iolite: the hidden blue
Iolite is the least famous of the three, and our quiet favourite. Its trick isn't a glow or a flash but pleochroism — it shows different colours depending on the angle you view it from, shifting between violet-blue, lighter blue and almost clear. Hold it one way and it's a deep sapphire blue; turn it, and the colour softens or disappears.

Caring for light-shift stones
One of the reasons we love working with these stones is that no two ever behave quite the same way. Two labradorites from the same parcel can flash completely different colours, and a moonstone's glow can vary from soft silver to vivid blue. We select each stone individually for its character rather than aiming for perfect uniformity.
All three are best treated gently. Labradorite and moonstone are relatively soft (around 6–6.5 on the Mohs scale); iolite is a touch harder (7–7.5) but still deserves care. The same simple habits keep all of them glowing: put jewellery on after perfume and lotion, wipe with a soft dry cloth after wearing, and store them apart from harder stones that could scratch them.
